Women's Basketball Finishes Season on the Road at Ripon

RIPON, Wis. – In a hard-fought conference matchup this afternoon at Weiske Gymnasium, the Beloit College Buccaneers displayed significant flashes of grit and defensive tenacity before ultimately falling to a high-powered Ripon College squad, 70-49. Despite the final score, Beloit proved they could compete with the conference's elite, bookending the game with strong individual performances and a resilient late-game surge.

Beloit entered the contest with high energy, immediately putting the Red Hawks (23-2, 16-0 MWC) on their heels. The Buccaneers (6-19, 3-13 MWC) won the opening jump ball and wasted no time, as Hailey Johnson (South Milwaukee, Wis.) converted an early layup to give Beloit the lead. Moments later, Julia Kennedy (South Milwaukee, WI) drained a three-pointer to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Buccaneers' defense was stifling in the opening period, held Ripon to just 25% shooting from the field. Beloit maintained a lead for over nine minutes of the first half, trailing by just a single point (13-12) heading into the second quarter.

The heart of the Buccaneers' effort was senior forward Johnson. Johnson was a force on both ends of the floor, logging a team-high 34 minutes. She finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds, but her defensive impact was even more impressive, recording 4 steals and 2 blocks. Johnson's ability to disrupt Ripon's passing lanes kept the Buccaneers within striking distance for much of the first half.

Supporting the offensive effort was Kennedy, who provided the perimeter spark Beloit needed. Kennedy finished with 12 points, including three makes from beyond the arc. Her shooting consistency was a primary reason Beloit was able to keep the Red Hawks' defense spread thin.

Other notable contributions came from Bailey Darneal (Colorado Springs, CO), who added 6 points and 4 rebounds, and Aina Mallorqui (Valls, Spain), who distributed the ball effectively while battling through 29 minutes of play.

The game's decisive shift occurred in the second and third quarters, where Ripon's depth and transition game began to take over. The Red Hawks capitalized heavily on Beloit turnovers, turning them into 32 points. However, rather than folding under the pressure of a 23-point deficit heading into the final frame, the Buccaneers showed remarkable character.

The fourth quarter belonged to Beloit. Refusing to let the game slip away quietly, the Buccaneers outscored Ripon 16-14 in the final ten minutes. The momentum shift was punctuated by a 9-0 scoring run late in the fourth quarter (at the 1:22 mark), sparked by aggressive play in the paint and improved ball security.

Beloit's bench also saw increased activity late in the game, with Charlotte Stewart (Dundee, Ill.) contributing a quick two points and the team collectively shooting a solid 77.8% from the free-throw line in the final period.
