Women's Hockey Shows Grit in Loss to Superior in Final Game of the Season

SUPERIOR, Wis. – In a contest defined by defensive resilience and opportunistic scoring, the Beloit College Buccaneers women's ice hockey team displayed immense heart this afternoon, falling just short in a 4–2 decision against the University of Wisconsin-Superior at Siinto S. Wessman Arena.

The Buccaneers (2-23-0, 0-12-0 WIAC) wasted no time establishing a presence on the road. Just 1:30 into the opening frame, Julia Fussy (Mahtomedi, Minn.) ignited the Beloit bench by netting her third goal of the season. The play was a masterclass in puck movement, with Claire Dixon (Edwards, Colo.) and Kennedy Gruhlke (Eau Claire, Wis.) earning the assists to give the Bucs an early 1–0 lead.

This opening tally provided Beloit with significant early momentum, forcing the Yellowjackets to play from behind and proving that the Buccaneers' offense could strike quickly against a tough conference opponent.

While the scoreboard favored the hosts by the final horn, Beloit goaltender Madison Bliss (Fort Frances, Ontario) was a huge factor in keeping the game close. Facing a relentless barrage of 53 shots, Bliss turned aside 49 of them, finishing with a stellar .925 save percentage.

Bliss was particularly vital during the first and third periods, where she stood tall against 20 and 17 shots respectively. Her performance kept the Buccaneers within striking distance throughout the afternoon, especially during a difficult second period where Wis.-Superior managed to capitalize on power-play opportunities to take a 4–1 lead.

Despite trailing by three goals late in the third period, Beloit refused to concede. The momentum shifted back to the Buccaneers at the 17:12 mark of the final frame during a critical penalty kill.

Displaying elite individual effort, Natasha Ludwig (Royalton) intercepted a play and raced down the ice to score an unassisted short-handed goal. Ludwig's goal cut the deficit to 4–2 and injected a final burst of energy into the Beloit lineup. The short-handed strike served as a testament to the Buccaneers' "never-quit" attitude, forcing Wis.-Superior to scramble in the closing minutes to secure the win.
