RANTOUL, Ill. – In a gritty performance defined by speed and opportunistic play, the Beloit College Buccaneers (2-1, 0-0 MWC) secured a 5-3 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran College (0-3, 0-0 NACC) earlier today at the Rantoul Sports Complex. Despite being out-hit by the Warriors, Beloit utilized a relentless run game—swiping nine bases—to manufacture runs and complete a mid-game comeback.
The game started as a defensive struggle under cloudy skies and 13 MPH winds. Wisconsin Lutheran jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning and extended it to 2-0 by the top of the fourth. However, Beloit's pitching staff, led by starter Sutton Bassett (Carlsbad, Calif) and followed by a strong relief effort from Bryce Lermer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), kept the game within reach. Lermer earned the win, tossing three innings and allowing only one earned run while navigating several high-pressure situations.
Beloit's offense found its spark in the bottom of the fourth inning through the legs of Parker Krcmar (Waupaca, Wis.). After reaching on a bunt single, Krcmar stole second and third base in quick succession. The pressure forced a throwing error by the WLC catcher, allowing Krcmar to cross the plate for Beloit's first run.
The Buccaneers employed the exact same strategy in the fifth. Jacopo "JT" Tamburini (Bologna, Italy) singled to right field, stole second, and then stole third. For the second consecutive inning, the Warriors' defense buckled under the pressure, committing another throwing error that allowed Tamburini to score the tying run.
The sixth inning proved to be the decisive frame for Beloit. After Jack Alport (Arlington Heights, Ill.) singled and the bases were eventually loaded, Beloit's hitters showed immense discipline at the plate. Seth Brankey (Salem, Wis.) was hit by a pitch to drive in the tying run, and Nolan Tomsyck (Muskego, Wis) followed with a bases-loaded walk to score Alport, giving Beloit a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Blake Nelson (Monument, CO.) provided a crucial insurance run. Nelson, who finished the day 2-for-4, laced a single to center field that drove home Brankey, extending the lead to 5-3.
Beloit's bullpen was spectacular in the closing stages. Caleb Lasher (Albuquerque, N.M.) entered in the seventh and dominated the final three frames to earn the save. Lasher allowed three hits but zero runs, striking out two and effectively silencing the Wisconsin Lutheran bats to seal the victory.
With the win, Beloit improves to 2-1 on the young season. The Buccaneers head to the Sunshine State next week and open play at the RussMatt Invitational on March 7th. First pitch against Concordia College (MN) is set for 12:45 pm CT from Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven.
