Baseball's Offense Stalled by Stockton

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – In a spring break matchup at the Chain of Lakes park, the Beloit College Buccaneers (6-3, 0-0 MWC)) displayed grit and defensive resolve, ultimately falling 4-1 to Stockton University (4-3) this morning. Despite a standout offensive performance from catcher Blake Nelson (Monument, CO.) and a dominant relief appearance by Caleb Lasher (Albuquerque, N.M.), the Buccaneers were unable to overcome an early lead established by the Ospreys.

The highlight of the afternoon for the Beloit offense was undoubtedly Blake Nelson. The junior catcher was a force at the plate, finishing the day 3-for-4. Nelson ignited the dugout in the top of the second inning with a sharp double down the right-field line and later added a crucial single in the fourth inning that helped set up Beloit's only run of the game.

Joining Nelson in the extra-base hit column was Jacopo "JT" Tamburini (Bologna, Italy), who connected for a double to right field in the sixth inning, continuing to show the power present in the Buccaneers' lineup.

Beloit's most productive frame came in the top of the fourth inning.
Seth Brankey (Salem, Wis.) showed excellent patience and speed, drawing a walk to lead off the inning and immediately swiping second base. Nelson then followed with a clutch single to right side, moving Brankey to third and putting runners on the corners with no outs.

The Buccaneers capitalized on the opportunity when Nolan Tomsyck (Muskego, Wis) lofted a deep sacrifice fly to center field. The fly ball was deep enough to allow Brankey to tag up and sprint home, cutting the Stockton lead to 3-1 at the time.

On the mound, Ben Schweit (Simi Valley, CA.) (1-2) earned the start and worked through six tough innings. Schweit struck out five batters and showed impressive control, not issuing a single walk during his 90-pitch outing.

The Beloit bullpen was a major bright spot in the later innings. Lasher entered in the seventh and was nearly untouchable. Lasher threw two perfect innings of relief, surrendering no hits and striking out two while facing just seven batters. His performance kept the Buccaneers within striking distance until the final out.

Defensively, the Buccaneers played a clean game, committing zero errors over eight innings of play—a testament to the disciplined coaching and focus of the Beloit squad.

The Buccaneers face Simpson College tomorrow morning for a doubleheader. First pitch from Chain of Lakes Park is set for 1:00pm ET / 12:00pm CT.
