ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Beloit College softball team showcased resilience and power this evening, splitting a competitive doubleheader against Rockford University. After a heartbreaking narrow loss in the opening contest, the Buccaneers (2-14, 0-0 MWC) bounced back with a commanding performance in the nightcap to earn a 5-2 victory at Regents Field.
Game One: Rockford 6, Beloit 5
The opener was a back-and-forth thriller that saw Beloit jump out to an early lead. The Buccaneers' offense exploded in the first inning when Allie Gustafson tripled to right field to score Witte. Rachel Overocker (Tinley Park, IL) followed immediately with an RBI single to push the lead to 2-0.
Beloit extended their advantage in the third inning during a high-pressure sequence. Lizzie Paschal (Holbrook, AZ) reached on a fielder's choice to drive in a run, and a subsequent throwing error by the Rockford shortstop allowed Lylah Murrah (North Pole, AK) and Kaitlyn Nicholson (Roscoe, Ill) to score, giving Beloit a 5-2 cushion.
Despite the early offensive barrage and a multi-hit game from Murrah, Rockford managed to chip away at the lead, eventually walking off with a run in the bottom of the seventh to steal a 6-5 victory.
Game Two: Beloit 5, Rockford 2
The Buccaneers found their rhythm in the second game, relying on a balanced attack of power hitting and stellar relief pitching.
The scoring opened in the first inning when Allison Olson (Sandwich, IL) drove a clutch single to left field, bringing home Kaylee Witte (Poplar Grove, IL) to tie the game early. After Rockford reclaimed a brief lead, Witte stepped up again in the second inning with an RBI single to center, scoring Joey Meyers (Orfordville, Wis.) and knotting the game at 2-2.
The momentum shifted permanently in favor of Beloit in the third inning when Gustafson launched a solo home run to right field. The blast gave the Buccaneers a 3-2 lead and provided a spark that lasted the rest of the afternoon.
Beloit added crucial insurance runs in the seventh. Olson earned her second RBI of the game the hard way, being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Nicholson. Moments later, Ava Wiegel (Argyle, WI) reached on an error that allowed G Calderon (Winthrop Harbor, IL) to cross the plate, sealing the 5-2 win.
On the mound, Samantha Friedrichsohn (Waukesha, WI) earned the win, while Avary Briggs (Albany, Wis.) delivered a masterful performance in relief. Briggs threw five shutout innings, allowing just four hits and preserving the lead to earn the save.
The Buccaneers are back in action for their home opener tomorrow agaisnt Dubuque. Games are set for 1 and 3 pm.
