Baseball Stamps Out Prairie Fire to Secure Series Sweep

BELOIT, Wis. – The Beloit College Buccaneers showcased their offensive depth and power this afternoon, dismantling Knox College 12-3 at home. The victory improves Beloit's season record to 16-12 and further solidifies their standing in conference play with an impressive 9-3 mark.

While the Prairie Fire (5-24, 3-9 MWC) managed to scratch across an early run in the top of the first, the Buccaneers responded with an immediate and overwhelming counter-attack that defined the rest of the afternoon.

The Buccaneers' power was on full display early. In the bottom of the first inning, Blake Nelson (Monument, CO.) evened the score with a solo home run down the right-field line. Moments later, Jacopo Tamburini (Bologna, Italy) gave Beloit a lead they would never relinquish, lining a two-run double to right-center to score Parker Krcmar (Waupaca, Wis.) and Aiden Wood (Chandler, Ariz.).

Tamburini wasn't finished, however. In the fifth inning, he launched a solo home run of his own, finishing the day 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Nelson also remained a constant threat, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including run-scoring singles in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Beloit's offense was as disciplined as it was powerful. Designated hitter Wood reached base in all four of his plate appearances, drawing three walks and adding an RBI single in the fourth inning.

The Buccaneers also utilized aggressive baserunning to keep the pressure on Knox. In the third inning, Krcmar successfully swiped second base; the ensuing throw allowed Wood to hustle home, extending the lead to 4-1.

Any hopes of a Knox comeback were extinguished in the bottom of the seventh when Beloit exploded for five runs. The highlight of the frame was a bases-clearing triple by Seth Brankey (Salem, Wis.), which drove in Jack Alport (Arlington Heights, Ill.), Brody Bremer (Mesa, Ariz.), and Drew Hanson (Edgerton, Wis.). Brankey's clutch hit broke the game wide open at 10-3, followed shortly by RBI singles from Nelson and Krcmar to cap the 12-run performance.

While the bats provided the fireworks, Beloit's pitching staff stifled the Knox lineup. Erick Tiegs (Waukesha, Wis.) provided a solid start, surrendering only one earned run over three innings. Caleb Lasher (Albuquerque, N.M.) earned the win (2-0) with two dominant innings of hitless relief. The bullpen combination of Collin Wright (Longmont, CO.), Brankey, and Alport combined to shut the door over the final frames, ensuring the Buccaneers walked away with a dominant conference win.

The Buccaneers sit in second place in the conference standings, behind Grinnell. The Bucs and Pioneers meet this weekend in Grinnell, Iowa for a three game clash. Games one and two are set for Saturday at 12 and 2:30 with the series concluding on Sunday at noon.
