BELOIT, Wis. – The Beloit College Buccaneers displayed significant offensive resilience today, putting up 12 total runs across a home doubleheader against Grinnell College. While the Pioneers (8-20, 3-5 MWC) ultimately took both contests—winning the opener 13-6 and the nightcap 10-6—the Buccaneers' (3-29, 1-7 MWC) lineup showed plenty of teeth, highlighted by explosive multi-run innings and standout individual performances.
Game One: Beloit 6, Grinnell 13
In the first game of the afternoon, Beloit proved they could strike quickly and efficiently. Trailing early, the Buccaneers' offense ignited in the bottom of the second inning, plating five runs to briefly tie the game.
The rally began when Sydney Weisman (Brookfield, Wis.) and Ava Wiegel (Argyle, WI) reached base, setting the stage for Qitarra Olson (Onalaska, WI), who laced an RBI double to center field. The momentum continued as Brinley Richards (Piedmont, OK) delivered a clutch pinch-hit single to right, driving in two more. The Buccaneers weren't finished, as the top of the order went to work: Kaylee Witte (Poplar Grove, IL) hammered an RBI double to right-center, followed immediately by a G Calderon (Winthrop Harbor, IL) RBI double to left-center.
Beloit added another run in the third inning when Avary Briggs (Albany, Wis.) reached on an error and was eventually driven home by a Q. Olson groundout, keeping the Buccaneers within striking distance through the middle frames.
Game Two: Beloit 6, Grinnell 10
The Buccaneers carried that offensive energy into the second game, scoring in four different innings. Beloit jumped out to an early lead in the first when
Allison Olson (Sandwich, IL) drove home Witte with an RBI single to left.
The Buccaneers added two more in the second inning thanks to the speed of Jessalyn Coppe (Niles, IL). After Kiley Hansen (Greenville, WI) reached on an error and stole second, Coppe drove her in with a sharp single. Later in the inning, Q. Olson showed great plate discipline, drawing a bases-loaded walk to plate Coppe and keep the pressure on Grinnell.
Beloit's most impressive display of power came in the sixth inning. Avary Briggs singled to center, followed by a booming RBI triple from Coppe. Paloma Reyes (Beloit, Wis.) then followed up with an RBI single to shortstop, scoring Coppe. The Buccaneers fought until the final out, adding one last run in the seventh when Allie Gustafson (Beloit, Wis.) doubled deep to center field to score Lizzie Paschal (Holbrook, AZ).
The Bucs head to Mount Vernon, Iowa tomorrow for a doubleheader with Cornell. First pitch from the Van Metre Family Softball Field is set for 1 pm.
