BELOIT, WI – In a matchup defined as much by the elements as the action on the field, the Beloit College women's lacrosse team faced off against a potent Lake Forest squad this evening. While the Foresters (5-4, 3-0 NACC) ultimately secured a 20-1 victory, the Buccaneers (0-8, 0-3 NACC) showed flashes of resilience before the game was officially called after three quarters due to inclement weather.
The highlight of the afternoon for the Buccaneers came late in the first period. Capitalizing on a man-up opportunity following a Lake Forest green card, Menah Garcia (New Hope, Minn.) found an opening in the defense. Garcia drew a foul and calmly stepped up to the hash for a free-position shot. With 5:06 remaining in the opening frame, she fired a strike past the Lake Forest keeper to put Beloit on the board, marking her second goal of the season.
Despite a relentless offensive push from Lake Forest, several Buccaneers stood out for their individual efforts. Sophomore goalkeeper Kim Pilon (Birch Run, Mich.) was kept busy throughout the three periods of play, recording 6 saves while also leading the team with 5 ground balls, showcasing her activity outside the crease.
In the midfield, Tate Hutchinson (Calgary, Alberta) and Willow Mashkuri (Middlesex, Vt.) fought hard to gain possessions for the Bucs. Hutchinson was a force in the draw circle, winning a team-high 5 draw controls, while Mashkuri added 3 draw controls of her own. Mashkuri also led the Beloit attack in pressure, recording 4 shots on goal—the most of any Buccaneer.
Defensively, Kylie Wolff (Alberta, Canada) and Claire Dixon (Edwards, Colo.) were active in disrupting the Foresters' transitions, though the visitors' depth eventually proved difficult to contain.
Lake Forest jumped out to an early lead, ending the first period up 11-1. The Buccaneers tightened their defensive posture in the second and third frames, but the Foresters' high-powered offense continued to find the back of the net.
As the third quarter drew to a close with the score at 20-1, officials were forced to halt play due to weather conditions in Beloit. With the safety of the student-athletes in mind, the game was officially called after 45 minutes of action.
The Bucs are back in action on the road on Saturday at Concordia-Wisconsin. Game time from Fitting Field in Mequon is set for 3 pm.
