Mount Vernon, Iowa — Beloit College (1-1, 0-0 MWC) put together a gritty defensive effort on the road but couldn't find the end zone in a 10-0 loss to Cornell College (1-1, 0-0 MWC) at Van Metre Field at Ash Park. Despite being outgained in total yards for most of the afternoon, Beloit actually finished with more total offense (256 yards to Cornell's 249) and matched the Rams drive-for-drive in first downs, 14-14. The difference came down to red-zone execution — and a costly string of turnovers that kept the Bucs off the scoreboard.
Quarterback Noah Carrasco (Cypress, TX) was the engine of the Beloit offense all day, completing 20 of 32 passes for 187 yards. He spread the ball around to nine different receivers, methodically moving the chains despite absorbing three sacks and playing behind a line that struggled to open running lanes.
Kadir Battle (Miami, FL) was Carrasco's go-to target and the game's most dangerous offensive weapon on either side. Battle hauled in 7 catches for 59 yards, including a 31-yard connection with Carrasco in the third quarter that set up one of Beloit's best scoring chances. Battle also added 6 rushing yards and a 31-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter, finishing as the game's leading all-purpose player with 96 yards.
Braeden Hoth (Fort Atkinson, WI) chipped in 3 catches for 38 yards, including a 19-yard grab in the first quarter and a 13-yard reception in the third that helped extend a long drive.
On the ground, Deandre Fields (Fort Worth, TX) led all Beloit rushers with 26 yards on just 4 carries — a 6.5-yard average — highlighted by an 18-yard burst in the first quarter that was one of the longest gains of the day for either team.
While the offense sputtered in the red zone, Beloit's defense kept the game within reach for all four quarters. Linebacker Jimmy Guillaume (West Palm Beach, FL) was all over the field, racking up a team-high 10 tackles (7 solo) to go with half a sack. Michael Snow (Parkland, FL) was right behind him with 9 tackles, including a full sack for 9 yards. Up front, Jaiden Ospina (Stuart, FL) was disruptive as well, notching a sack of his own among his 8 tackles, and Nate Caplan (Stuart, FL) added 7 tackles and a sack.
The Bucs' defensive backs also made their presence felt: David Howard III (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) broke up two passes, and Ayouba Sumoaro (Las Vegas, NV) had a key pass breakup of his own. Beloit's defense forced Cornell into 4-of-15 on third down for the game and held the Rams to just one offensive touchdown despite Cornell running 12 more offensive plays.
The Buccaneers return home to Historic Strong Stadium on Saturday, September 19th to host MWC-newcomers Luther College. Kick off is set for 1 pm.
