BELOIT, Wis. - Beloit College's men's soccer team put together one of its most spirited performances of the season this afternoon pushing Lakeland to the brink before falling 2-1 at Strong Soccer Field. Despite entering the match winless at 0-5-0 (0-0-0 MWC), the Buccaneers matched Lakeland's intensity for long stretches and briefly held the lead in the second half before the visiting Muskies (6-1-0, 0-0-0 NACC) answered late.
The first half was tightly contested, with Beloit actually controlling the run of play territorially — the Buccaneers held 63% possession in the opening 45 minutes. Goalkeeper Ben Borger Germann was busy but steady in the Beloit net, turning away four shots in the first half alone en route to a final tally of 11 saves on the day, keeping his side within striking distance despite facing 25 total shots to Beloit's 12.
The moment Beloit fans had been waiting for arrived in the 54th minute. Midfielder Miles Morrow buried his first goal of the season, finishing off a feed from Colin Frank to give the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead.
Lakeland answered just six minutes later when Jordan Davis-Troller equalized in the 60th minute, and the Muskies eventually pulled ahead for good on an Isai Gil goal in the 84th minute, sealing the 2-1 final.
Multiple players had bright spots for the Bucs, Morrow scored the Buccaneers' lone goal of the match, a first-half-of-the-season milestone tally assisted by Frank. Frank was involved in helping generate Beloit's offensive chances before departing the match with a foul drawn. The workhorse in goal, Borger Germann finished with 11 saves across the full 90 minutes, the difference-maker in keeping Beloit competitive throughout. Beloit's most active outfield shooter, Matteo Jijon (Wilmette, IL) tallied three shots on the day including one on target, while anchoring the back line as a defender. Royce Rodriguez and Nick Kingpavong each contributed multiple shot attempts down the stretch as Beloit pushed for a potential equalizer in the final minutes.
Beloit was outshot 25-12 overall and 7-2 on shots on target, and were out-cornered 5-2, reflecting Lakeland's second-half surge (the Muskies fired 17 shots after the break alone). Still, the Buccaneers' defense held firm for large stretches.
