MENOMONIE, Wis. – The Beloit College Buccaneers opened their 2026-27 campaign with a display of resilience and ball control this evening, ultimately falling just short in a 2-1 contested battle against the University of Wisconsin-Stout at Nelson Field.
Despite the final scoreline, the Buccaneers showcased a dominant tactical approach, controlling 55% of the total possession and maintaining pressure through the final whistle.
The highlight of the night for Beloit came in the 67th minute (66:03), providing a surge of momentum that nearly turned the tide of the match. Trailing 2-0, the Buccaneers' offense found its rhythm when Royce Rodriguez delivered a precision pass to find Pearce St. John. St. John capitalized on the opportunity, slotting home his first goal of the season to cut the deficit to 1-2.
The goal was a testament to Beloit's persistence. After a challenging first half, the Buccaneers came out of the locker room aggressively, out-possessing the Blue Devils and forcing the Stout defense into difficult positions.
Several Buccaneers delivered standout performances that anchored the team's competitive spirit throughout the ninety minutes. Other than the duo that accounted for the Bucs only goal, Matteo Jijon (Wilmette, IL) and Marco Castillo were relentless in the attacking third, combining for four of the team's ten shots and consistently forcing the Stout defense into difficult positions.
On the defensive side of the pitch, the Buccaneers relied on the steady presence of goalkeeper Ben Borger Germann, who withstood a high-pressure first half to record six crucial saves, keeping Beloit within striking distance until the final whistle. His efforts were bolstered by the endurance of Nicholas Williams (Fenton, MO), who logged 89 minutes of disciplined play, and Rosario Escalera (Beloit, Wis.), who played a vital role in a defensive rotation that limited the Blue Devils to just four shots in the entire second half. Together, these key performers demonstrated the depth and resilience that will define the Buccaneers' 2026 season.
Stout jumped out to an early lead with goals from Kevin Lowery (9th minute) and Logan Bergien (27th minute). Beloit had a golden opportunity to equalize early on when they were awarded a penalty kick at the 20:30 mark, but Jijon's attempt narrowly missed, leaving the Buccaneers chasing the game.
The second half was a different story, as Beloit's conditioning and tactical discipline took over. The Buccaneers' defense, led by 89 minutes of work from Williams and a strong shift from Escalera, limited Stout to only four shots in the second period.
Beloit finished the match with 10 total shots and earned three corner kicks, fighting until the final seconds when a last-ditch effort by Trey White for Stout was saved by Borger Germann at the 88:38 mark, giving the Buccaneers one final chance to push forward.
The Buccaneers play their first action at the Strong Complex Soccer field on Saturday when they host Trine at 1 p.m.
