BELOIT, WI – Beloit College's women's soccer squad fought hard on home turf at Strong Soccer Field this afternoon but ultimately fell 1-0 to Marian (WI) in a tightly contested non-conference matchup decided by a single second-half strike. The Buccaneers (1-5-1, 0-0-1 MWC) pushed the pace throughout the match and generated real pressure, but couldn't find the back of the net against a resilient Marian defense.
Despite being outshot 13-9 for the match, Beloit controlled long stretches of play, especially after halftime when the Buccaneers outshot the Sabres 7-2 in the second half alone. Beloit also won the corner kick battle 5-2 and forced Marian goalkeeper Cristal Muniz into five saves on the afternoon.
The lone goal of the match came in the 60th minute when Marian substitute Allegra Hong scored an unassisted goal to make it 1-0 — a strike that would ultimately stand up as the game-winner despite Beloit's continued pressure in the final 30 minutes.
Fianne Makela (Duluth, MN) was a workhorse for the Buccaneers, playing 85 minutes and recording two shots, including a shot on target in just the 4th minute that forced an early save from Muniz. She added another shot on target in the 68th minute, also saved, and was Beloit's most active outfield player with four fouls drawn/committed over the course of the match.
Grace Christos (Valporariso, IN) was Beloit's most dangerous attacker down the stretch, firing two second-half shots — one just wide in the 75th minute and another on target in the 80th minute that Muniz turned away. Christos played 85 minutes and was a constant threat in the attacking third.
Maggie Wood (Bangkok, Thailand) opened the scoring chances for Beloit with a shot on target just 27 seconds into the second half (the 45:27 mark), forcing an early save from Muniz. Wood logged 83 minutes before being subbed off.
Sophia Dietz (Schaumburg, IL) anchored the back line in goal, making six saves across 90 minutes despite the tough 1-0 loss, which dropped her season record to 0-3-1.
Other notable contributors included Mikayla Campbell (Madison, WI), who came on and fired a shot wide in the 75th minute, and Willow Mashkuri (Middlesex, VT), whose 25th-minute shot on target was saved by Muniz during a lively opening-half spell for the Buccaneers.
Beloit started the brighter side, with Makela's early shot in the 3rd minute testing Muniz right away. The first half stayed even in the shot count (5-2 in Marian's favor) and scoreless through 45 minutes, with both keepers sharp — Dietz and Muniz combined for four saves in the opening period.
The second half saw Beloit ramp up the pressure, out-shooting Marian 7-2, but a string of missed and saved chances — including efforts from Wood, Ayoung, Campbell, and Christos (twice) — meant the Buccaneers couldn't equalize after Hong's 60th-minute goal for Marian.
The Buccaneers play their first MWC home match of the season on Tuesday when they host the Knox College Prairie Fire. Kick off from the Strong Complex Soccer Field is set for 4 pm.
