WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Beloit College Buccaneers volleyball team payed a rigorous double-header at the Sherwood Center this evening. While the Buccaneers faced two tough results against Whitman College and Whitworth University, the day was defined by the clinical efficiency of Beloit's veteran attackers and a defensive grit that forced their opponents to earn every point.
In the first match of the day, Beloit College went toe-to-toe with Whitman. Despite a 3-0 defeat (25-21, 25-10, 25-19), the Buccaneers' offense was firing on all cylinders. Madeline Holthaus (Saint Paul, MN) led the charge with a standout performance, recording 8 kills on just 17 attempts for a blistering .412 hitting percentage.
Beloit's net defense was a major factor early on. Daniela Perez (San Francisco, CA) and Naomi Murphy (Dubuque, Iowa) anchored a front line that out-blocked Whitman 3.0 to 0.0 in the first set. Perez finished the match with 6.0 points, including two solo blocks, while Murphy contributed a solo block and three assists.
The Buccaneers showed their "never-quit" attitude in the first set. Trailing 16-9, Beloit went on a spirited 9-5 run. Kills from Holthaus and Kierra Rayne Hoover (Albuquerque, New Mexico) narrowed the margin to 21-18, putting Whitman on their heels before the hosts eventually escaped with the set.
Returning to the court to face a powerful Whitworth squad, Beloit College once again displayed flashes of dominance. Though Whitworth took the match in straight sets (25-14, 25-9, 25-16), the Buccaneers' primary hitters continued to produce high-quality looks.
Holthaus remained the focal point of the offense, matching Selin Tufte (Clarkdale, Ariz.) for the team lead with 5 kills. Holthaus was once again remarkably efficient, hitting .385. Tufte added a spark to the rotation, leading the team with 5.0 total points in the match. Hoover also remained a steady presence, contributing 4 kills.
The Buccaneers' setting duo of Aaliyah Gerard (Aiea, HI) (6 assists) and Lizzie Paschal (Holbrook, AZ) (4 assists) worked tirelessly to navigate a tough Whitworth serve, while Sydney McClellan (Eastvale, Calif.) led the back row with 4 digs.
Beloit grabbed the early momentum in the second set. Paschal found Tufte for a kill to give the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead. Moments later, Hoover hammered home a kill to tie the set at 2-2, showcasing Beloit's ability to compete with the region's elite.
In the final frame, Beloit refused to go quietly. Trailing early, the Bucs utilized kills from Tufte and Holthaus to stay within striking distance midway through the set, eventually reaching 16 points against a stifling Whitworth defense.
The Bucs wrap up their action in Washington State tomorrow against UW-Stout. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m. CST
