BELOIT, WI – In a gritty afternoon match at Strong Soccer Field, the Beloit College Buccaneers (0-2-0, 0-0-0 MWC) displayed significant defensive heart and a late-game offensive surge, ultimately falling 2-0 to the Trine University Thunder (1-1-0, 0-0-0 MIAA). Despite the loss, the Buccaneers proved they could go toe-to-toe with the Thunder, particularly in a high-energy second half where they nearly doubled their offensive output.
The story of the match for Beloit was the stellar performance of goalkeeper David Staats (Meridian, ID). Facing a relentless Trine attack that fired 26 total shots, Staats was a wall in the net. He recorded a staggering 11 saves over 90 minutes, including several acrobatic stops in the first half to keep the Buccaneers within striking distance. His leadership from the back was instrumental in keeping the game competitive until the final whistle.
While the Buccaneers were unable to find the back of the net, the scoreline doesn't fully reflect the pressure they applied, especially in the closing periods. Beloit's offense came alive in the second half, matching Trine with 12 shots in the period.
Ervin Rosas was the primary engine for the Beloit attack. Rosas led the team with four shots, two of which were on target. His best opportunity came early in the 20th minute, forcing a difficult save from Trine's Brandon Walker.
Matteo Jijon (Wilmette, IL) was active throughout his 52 minutes of play, tallying three shots and consistently stretching the Thunder defense. Coming off the bench, Royce Rodriguez provided a spark for the Buccaneers, recording three shots and testing the keeper in the 67th minute. Both Kenji Taira and Evan Miranda (Grants Pass, Ore.) midfielders managed to put shots on goal, forcing the Trine defense into desperate clearances.
Trine opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Diego Herrera found the net following an assist from Ben Borak. Beloit responded by ramping up the intensity, dominating stretches of possession in the second half. The Buccaneers earned two corner kicks in the final 15 minutes as they searched for the equalizer.
However, as Beloit pushed numbers forward in hopes of a late goal, Trine's Britton Sala managed to secure a counter-attack goal in the 84th minute to seal the 2-0 result.
The Buccaneers are on the road for their next two matches, heading to Naperville and Chicago. They face North Central on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Illinois Tech on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
