RIVER FOREST, Ill. – In a hard-fought non-conference matchup this afternoon, the Beloit College women's soccer team displayed significant defensive resilience despite a 3-0 loss to Concordia University Chicago (CUC) at Concordia Stadium.
The Buccaneers (0-3-0, 0-0-0 MWC) faced a relentless offensive barrage from the Cougars (1-2-0, 0-0-0 NACC), particularly in the first half. However, the story of the opening period was the standout performance of Beloit goalkeeper Mikayla Campbell (Madison, WI). Under constant pressure, Campbell turned away six shots in the first 45 minutes alone, finishing the night with a total of eight saves. Her effort kept the Buccaneers within striking distance for much of the contest.
Beloit's defensive unit, led by Sydney Rausch (Boise, ID) and Campbell—both of whom played the full 90 minutes—successfully repelled thirteen shots in the first half before CUC finally found the back of the net in the 40th minute.
While opportunities were limited for the Beloit attack, the Buccaneers were highly efficient when they did advance. Of the three shots Beloit recorded during the match, all three were on target, forcing CUC goalkeeper Naomi Gonzales into action.
The Buccaneers' best scoring chances came from Maggie Wood (Bangkok, Thailand), Grace Ramel (Chicago, IL) and Grace Christos (Valporariso, IN). In the 68th minute, Wood broke through the midfield to fire a dangerous shot toward the bottom right corner, nearly putting Beloit on the board. Just minutes later at 73:30, Ramel found space on the right side, forcing another difficult save from Gonzales. Late in the game (80:39), Christos unleashed a centered strike that tested the Cougar defense once more.
Concordia Chicago broke the scoreless tie at 39:25 when Erika Flores scored off assists from Cadence Hamby and Stacey Maskery. The Cougars doubled their lead just before halftime at 43:30 with a goal by Isabelle Fairless.
Beloit adjusted well in the second half, tightening their formation and limiting CUC's clear-cut chances. The final goal of the match did not come until the 73rd minute, when Stacey Maskery scored for the Cougars.
Despite the result, the Buccaneers showed flashes of clinical precision in the final third and a "never-quit" attitude on the defensive end. Other key contributors who logged heavy minutes for Beloit included Gianna Clementi (Wauwatosa, WI) (87 minutes), Zyana Turcios (Elmwood Park, Ill.) (82 minutes), and Christos (80 minutes).
The Buccaneers return to the Strong Complex Soccer field on Thursday, September 10th when they host Rockford University. Kick off is set for 4:30 p.m.
