A two-sport standout at Beloit College, Gutierrez named the SAAC Male Freshman of the Year and SAAC Male Sophomore of the Year his first two years as a Buccaneer. He went on to earn the Donald 'Red' Janssen Award, given to the junior student-athlete and wrapped up his collegiate career with the Pat Dawson Award recognizing Beloit College's top male senior student-athlete.Â
A forward/midfielder on the soccer pitch, he became Buccaneer selected First Team All-MWC since 2012 as a junior. Hampered by an injury much of the season, he still tied for the team lead in goals scored and was second on the team in points as a senior. Despite being one of the best soccer players to grace the pitch as a Buccaneer, this student-athlete stood out even further on the track.
A stellar hurdler, he holds multiple records, the most notable in the 400-meter hurdles. In the 2018 outdoor season, he successfully defended his title in the event at the conference championships for the second time. He went on to break his own record in the event at a last chance meet to earn a spot in the national championships. He surpassed the record once again in the prelims and then broke it for the third time in as many races to finish seventh in the nation, becoming the second male track and field student-athlete in program history to earn All-America honors. He worked tirelessly to return to the track from injury for his final season outdoors. Competing in minimal meets in order to stay healthy for the conference championship, Gutierrez erupted on the scene besting the competition to secure the coveted career sweep in the 400-meter hurdles as a four-time MWC champion in the event.
