Beloit Splits with Ripon on the Road

The Beloit College baseball team split a twinbill with the Red Hawks of Ripon College on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers topped the host school 5-3 before falling in the second game 8-0.

The Bucs struck first on one hit and with the help of a Red Hawk miscue in the top of the first inning. Jalen Davis notched a single through the right side with one out. A dropped fly ball allowed Ethan Conley to reach and advance to second landing Davis on third. Both runners advanced with Davis crossing the plate on a wild pitch. Jeremy Dutton's RBI sacrifice fly to center gave Beloit a 2-0 lead.

Two innings later, the Bucs doubled up. Nick Schmidt led off the frame with a single to right center and moved up 90 feet on a groundout. Conley singled to left to score Schmidt from second for the first run. Dutton reached on a fielder's choice that brought Terrence Cribbs to plate with two outs. Back-to-back fielding errors allowed Cribbs and Bronson Balholm to reach and Dutton to score giving Beloit a 4-0 lead, all they would need for the victory.

Ripon plated single runs in the fourth, seventh and eighth while the Bucs added an insurance run in the seventh for the final.

Danny Belling picked up the win on the mound allowing just one earned run in seven innings of work while striking out six. The top three batters in the Bucs' lineup tallied two hits each including Schmidt, Davis and Conley.

The nightcap was a much different story as the Buccaneer bats went cold. Beloit was one-hit in the game while nearly 20 Bucs made appearances in the game. David Harrison suffered the loss to fall to 3-4 on the season.

Up Next: The Bucs will host Ripon at Strong Field Sunday for a pair of games beginning at 1 p.m.
