Bucs Split Pair of Games at Wheaton

The Beloit College baseball team bounced back from a 6-3 loss to Concordia-Moorhead with a 9-6 win over Dominican in a pair of games in Wheaton, Illinois Thursday.

The Bucs outhit Concordia in the first game but left 10 Bucs on base in the loss.

The Cobbers opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first. The Buccaneers responded with two of their own in the next half inning. Nick Schmidt notched a one-out single to center field and Mark Christine tagged a triple to right center in the next at bat to put the Bucs on the board. A groundout plated Christine to knot the game at 2-2.

CCM came back with a single run in the bottom of the second before the pitching and defenses took over blanking the opposing offenses through the sixth inning.

The Cobbers registered four of their seven hits in the game in the bottom of the seventh to score three runs. Christine drove in another run for Beloit in the top of the eighth but the Bucs stranded three in the inning.

Five Bucs posted multiple hits in the game including three off the bat of Jeremy Dutton. Brice Call, Ethan Conley, Schmidt and Christine recorded two apiece.

Danny Belling went seven innings, striking out six while walking two in the loss.

Beloit scored multiple runs in each of the first three innings en route to a 9-6 win over the Stars in the second game of the day.

To open scoring in the nightcap, Jalen Davis notched a one-out single up the middle. Conley drew a two-out walk and Bronson Balholm took one for the team to load the bases. Schmidt came up big with a double down the right field line for two RBI.

The Bucs added two more in the second inning. Christine continued to have the hot bat with a one-out, ground-rule double to right field. Call walked and Davis followed with a single to center field to load the bases. Two Bucs crossed the plate courtesy of an error on the Dominican infield extending the Beloit lead to 4-0.

Dominican got on the board with three runs in the top of the third.

The Buccaneers responded in their half with five runs on four hits. Schmidt led off the inning with a triple to right center. Another hit batter and a walk loaded the bases. With one out, Call came through with a single to right center that plated two and put runners on the corners. After a pitching change, Davis tagged a triple to right center plating two more. Dutton made it back-to-back extra base hits with a double to left center to score Davis and widen the gap to 9-3 in favor of the Bucs.

The Stars plated two more in the fifth and a single run in the sixth but the Bucs held on for the win.

Davis had the standout performance at the plate for Beloit going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Schmidt and Christine each registered two hits in the contest.

David Harrison picked up the win on the mound in five innings of work. Josh Nelson and Keith Haina combined to give up one run in four innings of relief.

The Bucs will wrap up play in Wheaton against the host team Friday at 5 p.m.
