The Beloit College baseball team split a twinbill with the University of Chicago winning the opener 4-1 and falling in the nightcap 8-1 on the road Monday afternoon. Both games were changed to seven inning contests due to the frigid temperatures.
The Buccaneer offense came out hot despite the cold temperatures in Chicago plating three runs in the first inning. Brice Call led off the inning with a single up the middle. With one out, the Bucs combined for three straight base hits. Jalen Davis singled to left field followed by a Jeremy Dutton single through the right side and Ethan Conley's base knock to left brought in two runs with the help of a Maroon miscue.
In the top of the second, Call tagged his second single of the game to move Mark Christine, who took one for the team to reach, to second. Nick Schmidt singled down the left field line to score Christine from second and give BC a 4-0 lead.
Chicago plated a single run in the bottom of the second before the defenses took over blanking the opposing side the rest of the way.
Beloit registered 10 hits in the game including two each from Call and Davis. Danny Belling and Keith Haina combined to allow just three hits. Belling registered the win on the mound striking out two and allowing just two hits in six innings of work.
In the nightcap, Beloit outhit Chicago but were unable to score their baserunners stranding nine Bucs along the way.
Chicago got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Bucs cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth. Dutton led off the inning with a double to center field. Terrance Cribbs notched a two-out single up the middle to score Dutton and make it 2-1 in favor of the Maroons.
The Maroons recorded four of their six hits in the game in the bottom of the sixth and used two errors to plate six runs and take an 8-1 lead after six innings.
David Harrison fell to 2-3 with the loss on the mound after allowing two runs on two hits in five innings.
On Deck: The Bucs will host Edgewood College for a single game on Wednesday, April 4. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
