The Beloit College men's soccer team lost 1-0 on an overtime penalty kick at Monmouth College Sunday afternoon.
The Buccaneers battled thwarting 20 shots including seven on goal in the contest until the overtime penalty. Collegiate rules feature the 'Golden Goal' meaning the first goal scored in the overtime period(s) immediately ends the contest.
The defenses kept the opposing offenses off the board through regulation. The Bucs got the first shot off in the overtime period with Jose Gutierrez firing a shot at the net that was saved by the Scots' goalie. Beloit keep Alex Lyon kept the game going with a save on the Buccaneers' defensive end at 92:53. Less than a minute later, the Bucs were called for a foul leading to a penalty kick. Monmouth's Lucas Sondgeroth took the kick finding the back of the net for the game-winner.
The Bucs tallied 11 shots in the game, six on goal including two off the boots of Deji Agunbiade and Andrew Marchesi each.
Lyon made seven saves in the complete game in goal for the Bucs.
The Bucs will host Augustana College Wednesday, October 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30.
