The Beloit College men's soccer team dropped their Midwest Conference opener to Grinnell College 4-2 Saturday afternoon at the Strong Complex in Beloit.
The Buccaneers were even with the Pioneers in shots (14-14) and had the advantage in corner kicks but were unable to come back from a 3-0 deficit.
Grinnell opened the scoring on a set piece after a foul about five yards outside the box. The free kick bent toward the back post and the Pioneers' Jasper Yang dove for the header inside the far post for a 1-0 lead at 8:50. Yang went on to score at the 30:22 mark and again early in the second half with 54:26 on the clock.
The Bucs' Andrew Marchesi notched his first goal of the season off an assist from Deji Agunbiade at 56:53.
Yang added one more to Grinnell's total at 82:02 making it 4-1.
Marchesi was on the dishing end of another Buccaneer goal with Griffin Engel beating the keeper at 87:09 to cut the Grinnell lead to 4-2 but, short on time, the Bucs were unable to complete the comeback.
Goalkeeper Alex Lyon had five saves in goal for the Buccaneers.
Beloit continues league play Saturday, September 29 on the road at Cornell College. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m.
