The Beloit College men's soccer team topped Augustana College (Ill.) 3-1 at the Strong Complex in Beloit Wednesday afternoon.
The Buccaneers opened the scoring less than 20 minutes in. Grady Spencer took a free kick from the right side into the box finding Jason Venzke. A quick touch to settle and Venzke found the far post beating the keeper for an early 1-0 Beloit lead at 17:41.
The Bucs took that lead into the halftime.
Thirteen minutes into the second half, Tyler Markell tallied the equalizer for the Vikings. Receiving the ball at the top of the box, Markell made the turn and fired with his left boot finding the back of the net inside the far post.
Beloit continued to press forward putting pressure on Augustana's back line and it paid off. In the 70th minute, the Viking keeper came out on a slow roller down the middle of the field. Forced to play it with feet because he was out of the box, his attempted pass was intercepted by Freddy Widmer who chipped it back over the goalie's head for his first goal of the season.
Less than 10 minutes later, the Bucs struck again. Andrew Marchesi served a ball in from the left side of the box hitting Griffin Engel in stride. A great first touch allowed Engel to square up a shot with his right boot back toward the left post beating the diving keeper's outstretched arms and giving the Bucs a 3-1 lead.
The Buccaneer defense stifled the Viking offense the rest of the way to seal the win.
Beloit keeper EJ Lowney, who took over in net for the second half, recorded two saves picking up the win.
The Bucs return to Midwest Conference action hosting Lawrence University Saturday, October 6 at 3:30 p.m.
