The Beloit College volleyball opened 2018 Homecoming and honored Coach Ken Yasukawa with a sweep of Mount Mary University 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-13). The Buccaneers are celebrating Coach Ken all season as he plans to retire following the season after 30 years with the Beloit College Volleyball program.
Beloit rode the momentum from the beginning scoring the first seven points of the match. The Bucs never looked back extending the gap to 21-8 ahead of the 25-14 first set final.
Set two was nearly the same as the first. The Bucs didn't score the first seven points of the set but they four-point run mid set to take a 16-9 lead en route to the 25-14 win. In each of the first two sets of the match, Beloit tallied 12 kills.
The Bucs turned up the pressure midway through the third set putting together a 5-1 run to take a 15-10 lead. Then with the scoreboard showing 16-13 in favor of the Buccaneers, Beloit rattled off nine in a row bolstered by four kills from ride side Molly Muller. In the set, the Bucs hammered down 16 kills.
The Bucs held a 40-22 edge in kills for the match hitting .272. Amanda Baran led Beloit with 13 kills while Eva Laun-Smith added a double-double with ten kills and 18 digs.
Paige Wimbrow set up the Buc hitters for 22 assists adding ten digs. Libero Shelby Strehlow added 14 digs to the team's total.
In between sets two and three, the Bucs recognized Coach Ken for his 30 years of dedicated service to Beloit College. Coach Ken is also a biology professor on campus specializing in red-winged blackbirds.
