Bucs Split with No. 21 Wheaton

The Beloit College baseball team split a pair of seven-inning games against No. 21 Wheaton College (Mass.) Sunday afternoon in their second day of competition in the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Florida.

The Lyons, who had advanced to the Division III World Series a year ago, took an early 2-0 lead after one complete inning.

Beloit evened the score in the bottom of the third. Mark Christine tagged a one-out triple to right center. Jalen Davis notched a two-out double down the left field line to plate Christine and score the Bucs' first run of the game. Davis would come in to score on an error by the Lyons' infield.

Both teams issued blanks in the fourth inning on defense. Wheaton regained the lead in the top of the fifth with a walk, sacrifice bunt and a hit.

Not to be outdone, the Buc bats came to life in the bottom of the sixth. Davis showcased his speed legging out a groundball to the pitcher for an infield single to lead off the inning. With one down, Terrance Cribbs singled to left field to put two runners on. A pitching change didn't slow the Buccaneers down as Ethan Conley doubled to right center to plate one run and leave two Bucs in scoring position. Joe McKay was intentionally walked to load the bases and was relieved on the base bath by Jordan Edwards. Ethan Stoneberg took one for the team to plate BC's second run of the inning.

Baylee Slevira kept the inning going with a two-RBI double to right center. Christine laid down a perfect bunt and the speedy Robbie Achramowicz, who had taken over for Stoneberg on first earlier in the inning, scored on the squeeze without a play at the plate. Brice Call got in on the action with a single to center field that saw another Buc touch home, the sixth of the inning to give Beloit an 8-3 advantage.

The Buccaneer defense downed the Lyons in order in the final inning to register their first win of the season.

Davis led Beloit with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate while Conley recorded hits in two of his three at bats. Mike Weeden started the game on the mound for Beloit scattering four hits over five innings of work. Keith Haina picked up the win allowing just one hit in two innings of relief.

The Bucs carried the momentum into game two scoring a run in the top of the first inning. A defensive and pitching battle ensued with fielders on both sides making some phenomenal diving catches.

A lone big inning led to the Wheaton victory in game two. The Lyons plated five runs on four hits with the help of three errors in the inning.

The Buccaneers continue play in the RussMatt Invitational with a game against Rutgers-Camden Monday morning at 9:15 a.m.
