The Beloit College men's basketball team fell to Lawrence University 67-48 on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Buccaneers led 6-4 early in the first half when the Vikings put together a 14-3 run to take an 18-9 advantage nearing the halfway point. Just a few minutes later, with the score 22-13 in favor of Lawrence, the Bucs scored six straight to pull within three at the 6:05 mark. The teams traded buckets the rest of the way leading to the 28-23 Viking lead at intermission.
The first half stats were relatively even with Beloit shooting 38.5% (10-26) from the floor compared to Lawrence's 37.9% (11-29). The Vikings knocked down two more three pointers than the Bucs in the first 20 minutes of play.
Mylan Walters drained a three to open the second half and Matthew Miller followed with a layup to tie it up, 28-28, less than two minutes into the second half. LU responded with a 12-0 spurt that pushed the lead into double figures. A Tristan Shoup layup at the 12:27 mark cut the margin to eight, 40-32, but a three on Lawrence's offensive end extended the margin back into double digits where it remained the rest of the way.
The Bucs shot just 33% (19-57) from the field for the game compared to the Vikings' 48% (24-50). Neither team shot well from outside with the Bucs going 3-21 and Lawrence 4-17. LU did have an advantage from the charity stripe hitting 15-19 while the Bucs were 7-11 from the free throw line.
Shoup led the Bucs with 21 points on 10-18 from the floor. Andrew Walters tallied 11 rebounds and was one-point shy of a double-double.
Beloit will head south for a pair of games next weekend. The Bucs will take on Knox College in Galesburg Friday night followed by a meeting with the Blue Boys of Illinois College in Jacksonville Saturday afternoon.
