The Beloit College women's basketball team fell to Lake Forest College 75-66 in the first Midwest Conference matchup of the new year Wednesday night in Flood Arena.
It was a teeter-totter type of game as the Buccaneers jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first period before Lake Forest came roaring back to tie it up by halftime. The third was like the first as the Bucs outscored the Foresters by seven to reclaim the advantage but LFC dominated the fourth to tally the win.
Lake Forest notched the first bucket of the game but Beloit responded with a 9-0 run bolstered by seven points from senior
Shelby Kline to take a 9-2 lead at the 6:38 mark. The teams traded small runs before the Bucs scored the final seven points of the half to take a 27-16 lead after the first quarter.
The Foresters whittled away at the gap ending the second period on a 7-0 spurt to tie the game 33-33 at intermission.
Keeping with the pattern, small runs had the lead trade hands multiple times in the third until the Bucs closed the quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 54-47 advantage with one period remaining.
Beloit held the lead nearly have the quarter until Molly Schoenlein jumped sparked a 10-point swing for Lake Forest ending with just seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.
The Bucs shot just 31-percent from the floor in the game compared to Lake Forest's 51-percent. The game came down to the free throw line though as the Foresters made 15 or their 22 attempts while the Bucs, although more efficient, made eight of nine.
Kline led all scorers with 20 points adding a game-high six assists.
Candace Cunningham notched a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Dani Strejc pitched in 14 points and seven rebounds in the contest.
The Bucs return to action at home hosting Illinois College Saturday at 2 p.m.
