The Beloit College women's basketball team fell to the University of Chicago, ranked eighth in the latest d3hoops.com poll, 74-49 in the first game of the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tennessee Saturday.
The 9-1 Maroons led by just four after the first 10 minutes but extended their lead to 30-20 by intermission. A big third quarter for Chicago put the game out of reach for the Buccaneers.
The Bucs struggled from the floor shooting just 32-percent (17-54) from the field, 29-percent (6-21) from three-point range and 53-percent (9-17) from the charity stripe. Chicago hit 44-percent (33-75) of their opportunities from the floor, 31-percent (5-16) from long range and just 38-percent (3-8) from the free throw line in the contest.
The difference in the game came off the glass. The Maroons held a 51-37 advantage on the boards outscoring Beloit 23-0 in second chance points.
Shelby Kline heated up in the second half scoring 13 points in the final 20 minutes to lead the Bucs with 18 in the game. She added three assists and five steals.
Candace Cunningham tallied a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds while Lauren Glaser continued to find open teammates dishing out six assists in the contest. Glaser currently ranks among the top 20 in NCAA Division III for assists in a game averaging 5.8 per outing.
Beloit will wrap up play in the Music City Classic against another in-region opponent, UW-Eau Claire, tomorrow at 3 p.m.
