The Beloit College women's basketball team opened a weekend on the road with a loss to Knox College 69-56 in Galesburg, Illinois Friday evening.
Seniors
Shelby Kline and
Candace Cunningham provided the individual highlights for the Buccaneers. Kline knocked down six three-pointers in the contest, tying her career high. The senior guard went 6-14 from beyond the arc and 7-19 from the field to lead the Bucs with 20 points. Cunningham hauled in 16 rebounds, the second-most in her career and added a career high five assists in the game. Cunningham hit 7-14 from the floor and 4-6 from the free throw line for 18 points.
The Bucs and Prairie Fire traded baskets to open the game until an offensive drought allowed Knox to pull away.
Danielle Strejc hit a three with 4:04 on the clock in the first period to pull Beloit to within one, 11-10, but the Prairie Fire ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 17-10 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
Knox nailed a three in the first 15 seconds of the second quarter to push the lead into double figures but Cunningham responded with a jumper to knock the margin back into single digits. A quick field goal on the other end extended the gap into double figures where it remained the rest of the way. The Bucs outscored the Prairie Fire 13-4 in the final stanza but fell short of the comeback.
Strejc joined Kline and Cunningham in double figures scoring with 10 points while point guard
Lauren Glaser tallied five assists.
Beloit will make a pit stop in Jacksonville, Illinois to face the Lady Blues of Illinois College at 1 p.m. Saturday before returning to Beloit.
