Cunningham's Career-High Leads Bucs to Third Straight Win

Senior guard Candace Cunningham tallied her fifteenth double-double of the season recording a career-high 30 points and adding ten rebounds to lead Beloit to a 73-70 win over Grinnell College Wednesday evening. The win marks the Buccaneers' third straight as they wrap up play at home this season.

Cunningham's 30 came on 10-16 from the floor and a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line as she dropped in four key shots from the foul line in the final 32 seconds to create the eventual winning margin.

Beloit dominated the first quarter opening up a 17-4 lead with under two minutes left in the period and heading into the first break with a 21-11 advantage.

The second stanza was closer but the Bucs still outscored the Pioneers 16-12 to carry a 37-23 lead as the teams headed to the locker rooms for halftime.

Both teams came out of the intermission on fire offensively but the Pioneers were nearly lights out in the third quarter. Grinnell shot 71-percent hitting 10-14 of their shots from the field. They added two of four opportunities from long range and made 9-10 from the charity stripe in 10 minutes of play. The Bucs also shot well knocking down 6-10 from the floor and 5-6 from the free throw line but were outscored 31-17 in the period to knot the game 54-54 with one quarter left.

Cunningham hit the first jumper of the period but Grinnell countered with a 10-2 run to take a 64-58 lead with 7:31 to play. The gap hit seven on another Pioneer three ball, 68-61 with 5:32 on the clock. The Bucs continued to grind it out chipping away at the lead. Cunningham knocked down another jumper to pull Beloit to within three, then Lauren Glaser hit another two to make it 70-67 with just over a minute to play.

A foul on Grinnell's offensive end sent the Pioneers to the line but both attempts were unsuccessful. Cunningham hauled in the rebound on the second missed free throw and was immediately fouled with 32 seconds left. She hit both, nothing but net to reclaim the lead 71-70. A Pioneer three was off the mark and once again Cunningham came up with a huge rebound. She was fouled with 14 ticks of the clock left. Cunningham nailed both to make it a three point game, 73-70. Grinnell inbounded and sprinted up the floor getting in a final heave from beyond the arc but the shot was off target and Kelly Loudon reined in the loose ball to seal the win.

Shelby Kline added 19 points on 7-14 from the floor and 4-8 from three-point range. Loudon also registered double figures in the scoring colum with 10 points on 4-8 from the field adding eight rebounds. Glaser dished out a game high five assists followed by Cunningham with four and Kelly McLean tallied three in the contest.

The Bucs will wrap up the 2018-19 season on the road in Mount Vernon, Iowa with a 1 p.m. tipoff at Cornell College Saturday.
