Bucs Upend Prairie Fire, Seniors Recognized

The Beloit College men's basketball team topped Knox College 99-68 in Flood Arena Saturday afternoon. Prior to the game the Buccaneer seniors including Tyler Perleberg, Matthew Miller, Tony Nkwaya, Alex Perim and Logan Maulick were recognized. 

After a close start to the contest, the Bucs began pulling away midway through the first half. With the score knotted 12-12 at the 13:08 mark, Beloit opened up an 18-8 run to take a 30-20 lead in the game with 6:41 on the clock. Knox narrowed the gap to seven with an offensive spurt in the final two minutes of the half to make it 43-36 at intermission. 

One of the highlights of the half came off the hand of Perleberg who hit back-to-back triples for the Bucs early in the half. Tristan Shoup led all players at the break with 14 points on 7-12 from the floor. 

Miller notched the first bucket of the second half with a layup followed by a Darin Empereur jumper to push the margin into double figures. Knox responded with a jumper of their own to make it 47-38. Less than 20 seconds later, with 18:07 on the clock, Shoup knocked down a jumper than widened the gap to 11 and it remained in double digits the rest of the way. 

The Bucs posted their most efficient outing of the year offensively hitting 64-percent (7-11) from three-point range in the first and 61-percent (22-36) from the floor in the final 20 minutes. For the game, Beloit shot 56-percent (38-68) from the field, 57-percent (13-23) from long range and 67-percent (10-15) from the free throw line. Knox shot 41-percent (25-61) from the field, 28-percent (5-18) from beyond the arc and 72-percent (13-18) from the charity stripe. 

Shoup led all players with 20 points on 9-16 from the floor. Mason Jones added 16 on 5-6 from the floor, 3-4 from three-point range and 3-3 from the free throw line. Andrew Walters notched the lone double-double of the game with 14 points and 13 rebounds adding three assists. Dan Babb also entered double figures scoring with 11 including eight he dropped in a two minute span midway through the second half. Perleberg added another three in the second half to go 3-4 from beyond the arc for nine points in the contest. Darin Empereur tallied a game-high six assists adding seven points and two steals. 

Up Next: The Bucs will host Grinnell College Wednesday, February 13 in a rescheduled contest for their final home game of the season. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
