Cribbs Belts Two Homers in Bucs’ Loss

The Beloit College baseball team fell to 2-2 on the season with a 9-7 loss to Greenville University Monday afternoon.

The offenses were dialed in as the teams combined for 20 hits including four homeruns in the game.

The Buccaneers changed the scoreboard right off the bat with a run in the first inning taking advantage of a GU miscue. With two outs, Ethan Conley reached on the error and advanced into scoring position on Bronson Balholm's base on balls. Brice Call notched the RBI single to left field to plate Conley and give Beloit the early lead.

Beloit's defense registered the first two outs in the bottom of the frame before a hit-by-pitch and a double knotted the game 1-1 after one.

That score held until GU added four in the bottom of the third. A one-out double was followed up with a hit-by-pitch. A walk loaded the bases and Greenville's Andrew Torbeck cleared them with a grandslam to give GU a 5-1 advantage.

Terrence Cribbs got in on the long ball action with a two-run blast to left field in the top of the fifth to narrow the gap to 5-3.

Greenville responded in their offensive half with three more as Torbeck drove in two more runs on a double and then scored on a groundout to make it 8-3.

The Bucs pulled to within one with a big sixth inning at plate. Matthew Celentano led off the inning with a single to left field and advanced to second on a balk. A fielding miscue put runners on the corners with one out when Call swiped second to move into scoring position. Drew Freitag plated Celentano on a groundout to second base and Mitch Campbell brought in Call with a two-out single to center field. Cribbs stepped in the box and struck again with another two-run four-bagger that sailed over the left field fence to make it 8-7 GU.

Greenville added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-7. The Bucs threatened in the top of the eighth advancing a runner to third but were unable to push him across.

The defense held in the bottom of the inning and Beloit got back to their bats. Jalen Davis notched a leadoff infield single but a double play and a fly out sealed the win for Greenville.

The Bucs outhit Greenville in the game 12-8. Cribbs had the standout performance in the batter's box for Beloit going 3-for-4 with four runs batted in and two runs scored. Davis and Campbell each added two hits for the Bucs.

Mike Weeden suffered the loss on the mound allowing five runs on three hits in three innings of work.

Up Next: The Bucs will face Gordon College Tuesday at 10 a.m. Eastern time at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale.
