Baseball Rolls to Run-Rule Victory

The Beloit College baseball team rolled to a 15-5 (7 inning) run-rule victory over Gordon College Tuesday.

Gordon College took advantage of a couple Buccaneer miscues to take an early 1-0 lead after the first half inning. Beloit responded an inning later posting a five spot. Mitch Campbell led off the inning with a single up the middle. Drew Freitag notched a one-out single to left field and thee pair advanced into scoring position on Austin De La Cruz's groundout. Garrison Ferone drew a walk to load the bases and Nick Schmidt cleared them with a double to centerfield that plated three. Jalen Davis and Ethan Conley drew walks to load the bases once more. A single to centerfield off the bat of Bronson Balholm had two more Buccaneers crossing the plate for a 5-1 lead after two innings.

Gordon College scored a single run in the top of the fourth and the Bucs responded once again, doubling up in their half of the inning. Ferone and Schmidt registered back-to-back singles to open the frame. Davis reached on a Gordon miscue that allowed Ferone to score and Schmidt to advance to third. Davis swiped second during the next at bat. Balholm tagged a one-out single to left field for another RBI and Campbell doubled to left field for two more runs. Freitag put the pressure on the defense causing another Gordon error that allowed Campbell to score giving Beloit a 10-2 advantage.

After two more runs for Gordon in the top of the fifth and a single run in the top of the sixth, Beloit responded with five in the bottom of the sixth. The Bucs scored the five runs on three hits including a double down the left field line off Freitag's bat and singles from Schmidt and Conley.

The Bucs belted 12 hits in the seven inning affair including three off the bat of Schmidt. He added three runs scored and five runs batted in in the contest.

Jacob Sligar picked up the win on the mound for Beloit allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out five and walking one in 3.1 innings of work.
