Bucs Fall to Simpson on Walkoff

The Beloit College baseball team fell to Simpson College 10-9 at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida Thursday.

The Buccaneers plated nine runs on seven hits while the Storm posted 18 hits in the contest.

Simpson opened the scoring plating two runs in each of the first two innings to take an early 4-0 lead. The Bucs responded with a four-run third to tie it up. Brice Call, Nick Schmidt and Matthew Celentano drew back-to-back-to-back walks to load the bases. A Simpson miscue in the infield allowed one run to cross. Ethan Conley tagged a double to left field with a new pitcher on the mound to bring in two more. Conley came in to score on Bronson Balholm's two-out single to left field for the Bucs' fourth run of the inning.

After the thwarted two Simpson opportunities with pickoffs in the bottom of the third, Beloit came right back to the bats. Another SC error allowed Drew Freitag to reach safely. Schmidt took one for the team to put two runners on with one out. Celentano's groundout advanced both runners into scoring position and an intentional walk sent Jalen Davis to first to load the bases. Conley drew an RBI base on balls and a wild pitch in the next at bat plated another run to give Beloit a 6-4 advantage.

Simpson answered in their half of the frame. A solo blast opened the four-run inning for the Storm as Simpson reclaimed the lead 8-6 after four complete.

In the top of the sixth, Call drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on Davis' single to center field to cut the margin to one, 8-7. The defense sent the Storm down in order in the bottom of the inning. Neither team plated a run in the seventh but the Beloit bats went back to work in the eighth.

Schmidt was hit by a pitch with one out to get Beloit started. Celentano followed with a single to right field and Davis was intentionally walked, again, to load the bases. Conley came up clutch once again with a two-RBI single to left field to give the Bucs a 9-8 lead.

Simpson tallied the equalizer using a single, hit batter and another single to plate the tying run before the Bucs got out of the inning. Beloit was unable to capitalize on a Storm miscue that opened the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the inning, a one-out single followed by a groundout had a Storm baserunner in scoring position. A single to right field in the next at bat scored the game-winning run.

Conley led the Bucs' offense with a 2-for-4 performance in the batter's box with five RBI, a walk and a run scored. Balholm also registered two hits in four plate appearances adding an RBI and drawing one walk.

Keith Haina suffered the loss in 1.2 innings of relief allowing two runs and four hits while striking out two.

The 3-3 Bucs will play SUNY-Polytechnic in a pair of games Friday at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Florida. The twinbill is slated to begin at 3 p.m. (ET).
