The Beloit College women's volleyball fell to 2-2 on the season with a pair of losses to wrap up play in the Buc Blast. The Buccaneers fell to Kalamazoo in a close five-setter before dropping their final contest in the tournament to Olivet in four. Senior outside hitter
Amanda Baran was named to the 2019 Buc Blast All-Tournament Team following play Saturday.
The Bucs and Hornets went back-and-forth in the first set of the day on the main court in Flood Arena. The final score, 25-23 in favor of the Bucs, showcased the battle that included eight ties and five lead changes. Beloit found themselves trailing in set two but buckled down to mount an epic comeback. Down 22-15, Beloit rattled off three straight courtesy of two kills from Baran and another from
Molly Muller to pull to within 22-18. A Buc miscue and then a Kalamazoo kill made it set point, 24-18. Baran hammered down a kill to keep the set alive and won herself the serve. From the service line, Baran and Bucs posted seven straight points to take the match 26-24.
The Hornet defense stiffened following the second set keeping the Buc offense in single digits in the kills column taking the third and fourth sets 25-14 and 25-15 respectively. In the shortened, decisive fifth set, the score went back-and-forth once again until Kalamazoo tallied six of seven to take a 13-7 lead. The Bucs refused to fold though as
Aryssa Harris notched a kill,
Paige Wimbrow tallied an ace and Baran increased her kill total to 19 for the match. The comeback was not to be in the fifth, however, as Kalamazoo held on for the 15-10 set win to take the match.
Baran led all players with 19 kills. She added 11 digs and an assist block in the contest. Wimbrow set up her Buc attackers on 40 kills while
Courtnie Thomas led the backcourt with 23 digs.
