Laun-Smith Sets Record in Bucs' Loss

The Beloit College volleyball team lost a close four-set match at Rockford in front of a rowdy crowd Tuesday night. The Regents won 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21).

Junior outside hitter Eva Laun-Smith set the program record, surpassing her own mark she set last season, with 24 kills in the match. She led all players tallying more than half of the Bucs' kills in the four-setter.

The Buccaneers battled in every set keeping the score close but struggled to gain momentum away from the Regents that were carried by their home crowd. Beloit outhit Rockford in terms of efficiency in two of the four sets but unforced errors turned the tide each set.

Regina Guehlstorf led all players defensively at the net with two solo and three assist blocks as the Bucs outblocked the Regents 12-6. Laun-Smith also posted three assist blocks and Jade Daniel helped on a pair.

First-year Courtnie Thomas switched from defensive specialist to libero mid match leading Beloit in the backcourt with 26 digs. Laun-Smith added 15 digs while setter Paige Wimbrow tallied 14 to go along with 37 assists and Amanda Baran notched 13 digs in the match.

The Bucs will have two days off before returning to the court for a pair of matches in the first day of the Blue Angels Bash hosted by Mount Mary University in Milwaukee Friday. Beloit opens play against Iowa Wesleyan at 3 p.m. followed by a 5:15 matchup with Silver Lake College.
