Bucs Take Down Marian for Fifth Consecutive Victory

The Buccaneer volleyball team topped Marian University (Wis.) in an exciting five-set match (20-25, 28-26, 19-25, 25-17, 15-10) to win their fifth straight and improve to 7-3 on the season.

After the host school took the early lead with a first set win, Beloit bounced back for a hard fought second set win to even the match. The set went back-and-forth as the final score would suggest but the Bucs actually had to battle back from a deficit to capture the win. Beloit trailed by as much as five, 12-7, before coming back to tie up the set 14-14. From that point, the teams traded points and traded the lead until Marian was able to get a 22-20 advantage. The teams again traded points until Coach Lehua Kadooka was forced to call a timeout with the Bucs trailing 23-21. An ace for the Sabres out of the timeout gave Marian set point at 24-21 but the Bucs refused to fold. An attack error was followed up by a huge kill from Regina Guehlstorf to make it 24-23. Beloit knotted the set after another Sabre miscue but Marian bounced back to regain the lead 25-24. Eva Laun-Smith swung the momentum back into the hands of the Buccaneers hammering down a kill followed a yet another Sabre attack error to give Beloit a 26-25 lead and force a Marian timeout. This time a Bucs miscue out of the break in play tied the game 26-26 but Laun-Smith gave Beloit the serve back with a clutch kill. Paige Wimbrow capitalized with an ace to seal the win for Beloit.

Marian regained the advantage in the match with a set three win but the Bucs would not be deterred. Beloit tookk advantage of a number of Marian errors in the set sealing the victory with another service ace, this time off the hand of Jade Mosquera to force a decisive fifth set.

Kills from Aryssa Harris and Laun-Smith sandwiched a Sabre miscue to give Beloit an early 3-0 lead in the fifth set. Marian battled back to trail by just one, 8-7, when the teams switched sides. The Bucs continued to capitalize on costly Marian errors with Harris producing the final point with a kill.

The Sabres outhit the Bucs 61-31 for kills but Beloit limited their errors as Marian tallied 65 unforced errors in the contest. The Bucs also held a 14-4 advantage in blocks.

Laun-Smith led Beloit offensively with 17 kills in the match and tied for match-high honors with teammate Guehlstorf with four block assists. Wimbrow set up the Buccaneer attackers with 33 assists adding four aces in the five-setter. Jade Mosquera led the Bucs defensively in the backcourt with 21 digs followed by Laun-Smith with 19.
