The Beloit College women's basketball team was right with Grinnell for three quarters but a big third quarter for the Pioneers led to a 65-50 GC win in Flood Arena Tuesday night.
The Buccaneer women were tied with the Pioneers after the first quarter, 9-9, and trailed by just one at the half, 26-25. Beloit's solid defensive effort Tuesday, held the Pioneers to just 15-percent from the field in the first quarter and 27-percent in the second quarter. The Bucs used that defense to keep the score tight despite getting out-rebounded.
Grinnell's offense came out of halftime invigorated on the offensive end. The Pioneers hit 60-percent of their third quarter shots and added 7-8 from the charity stripe to take a 48-35 with just 10 minutes remaining.
Beloit refused to cave whittling away at the gap to pull to within five with 3:44 on the clock. From that point, fouls played a pivotal role as three Bucs were in foul trouble late. Following a couple of layups, the Pioneers capitalized on the opportunity to seal the game at the free throw line.
Lauren Glaser led Beloit with 14 points adding a game-high five assists.
T'Aira Boyance registered four steals and hauled in six rebounds.
Kelly McLean was active on the glass with six rebounds, all of the defensive variety.
Christy Melton led the Bucs on the boards with a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Bucs will wrap up the 2019-20 campaign against Cornell Saturday. The Beloit seniors will be recognized at the game which is set to follow the men's contest. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
