Emily Stapay crushed a single driving in senior outfielder
Madi Christine to lift Beloit College to its first win of the season Monday night. After falling 6-0 in the opener, the Buccaneers came back to top Mount Mary 5-4 in walkoff fashion in the nightcap. The pair of games was played at Sportscore Two in Loves Park, Illinois.
The Bucs struggled to get their offense going in game one but got it rolling in game two.
The Blue Angels took an early lead in game two scoring a single run in each of the first two innings. Beloit pushed back in the bottom of the third. Junior outfielder
Makayla Zundel singled to the right side of the infield causing a foot race to first base. Zundel won the race, diving in safely as the throw sailed out of play allowing Zundel to advance to second.
A sacrifice bunt from freshman infielder
Maddie Moser moved Zundel to third and then Christine singled through the left side to plate the Bucs' first run of the game. In the next at bat, Christine swiped second and as the throw skirted into the outfield, the speedster popped up and took off to third.
Kaitlynn Taft tied the game on a hard shot through the left side that brought Christine in to score.
Sophomore infielder
Stephannie Lopez restarted the offense in the bottom of the fourth. Laying down a perfectly placed sneaky bunt, Lopez beat the throw and advanced to second as the throw sailed out of play. Freshman pitcher
Cora Aubert followed with a single up the middle that had Lopez cruising home to give Beloit a 3-2 lead. Aubert added another tally to the Bucs' steal column and came around to score on Moser's single to right field to make it 4-2 Beloit after four complete.
Mount Mary came back with a single run in the top of the fifth courtesy of a pair of singles and a wild pitch.
A Buc miscue opened the top of the seventh to put the leadoff runner on. A fly out followed by a groundout allowed the runner to advance into scoring position. A single to left field brought the runner in and knotted the game 4-4.
With the top of the lineup up in the bottom of the seventh, Beloit would not be denied. Christine led off with an infield single. She swiped second once again to advance into scoring position. After a groundout, Stapay came to the plate and ripped a ball through the right side that had Christine rounding third and coming home without a play at the plate for a walkoff, 5-4, win.
Christine was 3-4 at the plate to lead the Bucs in game two while Taft was 2-4 in the batter's box.
Aubert registered her first collegiate win on the mound fanning four while allowing just one earned run in the complete game on the mound.
