Bucs Fall to Second-Best Scoring Team in the Nation

The Beloit College men's basketball team fell to the second-best scoring team in Division III with a 101-81 loss at Grinnell Wednesday evening. 

Despite holding the Pioneers under their season average of over 109 points per game, the Buccaneers couldn't match the 60-point second half posted by Grinnell. 

The Bucs held the advantage at the intermission, 48-41, bolstered by 15 points from shooting guard Michael Polakoski. He hit 5-9 from the floor and 3-5 from beyond the arc in the first half while Andrew Walters and Mason Jones gave Beloit a massive advantage on the glass with six rebounds each. The Bucs shot 57-percent (4-7) from long range in the half and got to the charity stripe making 16 of 18 from the free throw line to take the lead. Beloit's defense limited the Pioneers' trips to the free throw line to just seven opportunities in the period. 

Grinnell, known for its fast-paced action and large number of three-pointers, got going from downtown in the second half. The Pioneers hit eight three's and were able to get to the line more often making 16-23 from the charity stripe in the period. The Bucs struggled from long range in the second half and were held off the line leading to the final. 

Polakoski ended up with 23 points on 9-15 from the floor. Tristan Shoup posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Walters and Jones hauled in 11 and 10 rebounds respectively while Walters added six assists in the contest. Mylan Walters was active on the defensive side of the ball with a game-high four steals. 

Up Next: Beloit will host Lake Forest College Saturday, February 8 in Flood Arena. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
