Belling Fans 10 as Bucs Extend Win Streak

The Beloit College baseball team extended its win streak to five games with a 6-2 rout of Nebraska Wesleyan in the RussMatt Invitational Thursday morning in Auburndale, Florida.

Danny Belling bolstered the Buccaneers in the win with a fantastic performance on the mound. Belling was tabbed for the start fanning 10 while walking just one and scattering six hits in eight innings of shutout work. Zachary Miller and Kaiya Nishino finished out the contest on the mound for the Bucs as Belling registered the win to move to 1-1 on the season.

Beloit's offense gave the Buc hurlers all they would need with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Mitch Campbell sparked the offense with a one-out double to center field followed by an Austin De La Cruz single to left. Drew Freitag stepped into the box and belted a deep fly ball to center that allowed Campbell to score for the sacrifice fly and a 1-0 Beloit lead.

The Bucs added three in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of four hits and two NWU miscues. Beloit extended the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the seventh bolstered by Nick Schmidt's double to left center and another sacrifice fly, this time off the bat of Bronson Balholm.

A pair of hits in the bottom of the eighth added another cushion run to make it 6-0. A two-run blast for Nebraska Wesleyan in the top of the ninth led to the final.

Tyler Lunsford led Beloit offensively with a 2-2 performance at the plate adding an RBI and a run scored. De La Cruz also tallied a multi-hit game going 2-3.

The Bucs continue play in the RussMatt Invitational Friday with a doubleheader against Crown College. The first game of the twinbill is slated for 3:30 p.m. ET. Beloit will wrap up play in Florida against Penn State Abington Saturday at 9 a.m. ET.

Beloit College issued a statement earlier this week suspending all athletic contests both home and away at the conclusion of the Bucs' spring trip until March 30.
