The Beloit College volleyball team pushed to four sets against the top team in the Midwest Conference Friday night but fell to Grinnell 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-17, 25-16). The Beloit faithful created an exciting environment as the Bucs opened Homecoming weekend.
There was no quit in the Buccaneers Friday night as they showed grit and hustle against a solid Pioneer squad. In the first set, Beloit forced four set points before Grinnell put down the final point. In set two, the crowd was surging and so were the Buccaneers. It was a back-and-forth battle until the Bucs registered eight of 10 points to take a 16-10 advantage. Trading runs, Grinnell whittled the lead down to one, 23-22.
Isabel Conchillo Martinez hammered down a kill to give Beloit set point before McKayla Simao sealed the win with an ace.
The Bucs continued to battle through the third and fourth sets but the Pioneer offense was firing on all cylinders.
Katrina Sanchez and Conchillo Martinez tied for game-high honors with 10 kills each.
Abbie Schmidt and
Cora Linos ran the offense dishing out 16 and 15 assists respectively. Simao was aggressive from the service line putting pressure on the Pioneer defense to the tune of three aces. In the backcourt, libero
