The Beloit College women's basketball team showcased its stifling defense forcing 32 turnovers in a 63-39 win over Alverno College Wednesday evening in Flood Arena. The Buccaneers enjoyed a 31-13 advantage in points off miscues in the contest.
The Bucs scored on their first possession with
Elizabeth Kalk hitting the layup off an assist from
Hadja Bayo. Just 12 seconds later,
Hannah Welte registered the takeaway and fastbreak layin for a 4-0 lead. Beloit never looked back, holding the lead the rest of the way.
Following a fairly close first quarter, 14-11, Beloit began to pull away outscoring the Inferno 15-8 in the second to take a 29-19 lead into the intermission. On the other half of the break, the Bucs extended their advantage another five points in the third before sealing the game with a 17-8 spurt in the final 10 minutes leading to the final.
Beloit held the advantage in points in the paint 42-26 and second chance points 18-7 but the highlight was on the fastbreak where the Bucs tallied 17 points to Alverno's four. The Bucs shot 40-percent from the floor in the game knocking down 27-67 and were efficient from the charity stripe at 6-8. Beloit's defense held Alverno to 35-percent from the field (18-51) while sending them to the line just three times in the contest.
Kalk led all players with 13 points. Welte dropped in 12 while adding a game-high five steals and dishing out four assists to lead all players.
Christy Melton hauled in seven boards in just under 11 minutes of action to lead the Bucs while Bayo and
Cora Linos each registered two blocks in the game.
