The Buccaneer women's soccer team put forth a valiant effort Wednesday night on the road battling to a 1-1 draw at Marian University in the team's season opener.
Beloit held the advantage in shots (13-11) and corner kicks (5-3) but also tallied more fouls (9-3) in the contest than the home squad.
The Sabres struck first registering a goal in the 22nd minute on an unassisted score. That score held into the intermission.
A couple of shots from both teams in the first six minutes of the second half set the tone. Just over seven minutes into the period,
Abigail Membrino made good on an
Alayna Furch assist to tally the team's first goal of 2021 and tie the game 1-1.
The Sabres had the next best scoring opportunity in the 78th minute on a shot that Buccaneer keeper
Briana Arteaga turned away. Arteaga thwarted another scoring chance less than four minutes later. Beloit couldn't capitalize on a late corner kick to send the contest into overtime.
The two goal scorers each registered shots in the first overtime period but that was all the offenses could muster against the stifling defensive efforts of both squads. The second overtime period saw just one shot tallied.
Two keepers saw time in net for the Bucs.
Audrey Ketterer registered the start going 45 minutes. Arteaga came in at the half and finished out the final 65 minutes in goal. The pair of keepers combined to make four saves in the contest.
Up Next: The Bucs will host Maranatha Baptist Saturday, September 4 at 1:30 in the team's home opener.
