The Beloit College football team moved the ball well Saturday afternoon but couldn't capitalize in the red zone in a 38-7 loss to Cornell College on a hot day in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
The Buccaneers converted on just one of five trips to the red zone while the Rams made good on all four of their opportunities close to the end zone.
Beloit's offense moved the ball from the opening drive. Starting from their own 39, the Bucs registered a couple of first downs on pass plays that went for double digit yards before the drive stalled inside the Rams' 20. The Bucs would turn the ball over on downs and Cornell capitalized, marching all the way down the field and eventually converting a field goal attempt to take an early 3-0 lead.
In the Bucs' next drive,
Jacob Shafer found
Emiliano Reyes for a 26-yard strike for the big play of the possession. As the drive rolled over into the second quarter, it stalled inside the Cornell 25 and Beloit turned it over on downs once again. The Buc defense came up with a big play forcing Cornell into a huge loss on 3rd down and forcing a punt from the Rams' own 10-yard line.
Following a fair catch at the Cornell 48 and a pair of rush attempts, Shafer went back to the air hitting
AJ Fitzpatrick in stride for a 42-yard strike. A rush for a loss on first and ten from the Cornell 11 made it second down and 16. Shafer got some of the yardage back on second down before hitting
Bryan Casado for a 12-yard gain to give the Bucs first down at the one-yard line.
Lorenzo Powe was stood up for no gain but Shafer converted on second and goal faking the handoff and scampering into the endzone off the right side of his line to give Beloit the lead.
Rafael Cervantes Jr. made the extra point to put the Bucs up 7-3.
The Rams had the response going 59-yards in 13 plays to reclaim the lead 10-7.
On the ensuing kickoff,
Gavin Thorpe registered the longest play of the contest bolting upfield for an 88-yard return to give Beloit fantastic field position. As the seconds ticked away closing in on halftime, a Shafer pass attempt was tipped and intercepted near the Cornell five-yard line. The Rams took over and took a knee to run out the clock in the first half.
A pair of touchdowns in quick succession for Cornell in the third quarter extended the gap to 24-7. The Rams added another pair of scores in the fourth for the final.
Shafer was 16-29 for 160 yards adding the lone rushing touchdown for the Bucs. Casado was the most efficient out of the backfield averaging 7.5 yards on a pair of carries for Beloit. Shafer spread the ball around with six Bucs recording catches in the contest led by Fitzpatrick's six receptions for 59 yards.
Defensively,
Tre'von Colvin tallied 11 tackles including seven solo, a tackle for a loss and a forced fumble.
