Bucs Take Sabrecats to Five Sets

The Beloit College volleyball team pushed Maranatha Baptist into five sets but fell to the Sabrecats 3-2 (25-13, 18-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-8) Tuesday night in Beloit.

Wiping away the first set, the Buccaneers came back strong in set two. A few runs from MBU had Beloit trailing 17-13 when Abbie Schmidt went back to the service line. Schmidt ran off 10 straight courtesy of a pair of aces, a block from Isabel Conchillo Martinez and Regina Guehlstorf, kills from multiple Bucs, and a few Sabrecat miscues to force set point. Guehlstorf put the match away with a kill to even the match 1-1.

The third set went back-and-forth until Beloit posted five of six points late in the set to take a 19-17 advantage. Maranatha Baptist responded with a run of there own to reclaim the lead 20-18 before the Bucs rattled off six of the final seven points to take set three and a 2-1 match advantage.

The Sabrecat offense came out on fire to start the fourth set scoring nine of the first 10 points of the set. Trailing by as much as 11 in the set, the Bucs refused to fold and came roaring back to pull within one, 20-19. MBU halted the momentum with a pair of kills and went on to take set four to force the decisive fifth set.

Maranatha used the momentum built in set four to take the final set and match.

Guehlstorf led the Bucs at the net hamming down 15 kills and tallying five block assists. Katrina Sanchez joined her teammate with double digit kills posting 14 and adding a team-high 22 digs. Libero Jade Mosquera registered 19 digs while setters Cora Linos and Schmidt added 17 and 16 respectively. The setting duo combined for 33 assists in the match.
