BELOIT, Wis. - Beloit's football team defeated Lawrence 56-0 Saturday afternoon, as the Buccaneers scored touchdowns on offense, defense, and special teams. Beloit finished the game with 219 yards on 46 carries (4.8 ypc), while the Vikings managed just 30 yards on 25 attempts.
Beloit scored early and often, with
Jacob Shafer starting off with a one-yard touchdown plunge. On the very next play from scrimmage, Beloit found the end zone again when
Gavin Thorpe returned an interception 29 yards to paydirt. That's where the score would stay until the final seconds of the first half when Shafer found receiver
AJ Fitzpatrick for a two-yard touchdown to give the Buccaneers a 21-0 halftime advantage.
Beloit didn't waste time adding to that lead, as Fitzpatrick returned the second half kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. Later in the third quarter, the Buccaneers would drive 61 yards in 17 plays, using nearly nine minutes off the clock, capped by a one-yard touchdown run by
Devin Bush.
Drake Marquez got into the scoring action in the fourth quarter, scoring from six yards out, while
Donavan Richardson would later add a 23-yard touchdown run. Bush then capped the scoring in style with a 70-yard scamper for his second TD of the day.
Bush finished the game with 81 yards on six carries (13.5 ypc), while Marquez and Richardson added 70 and 53 yards, respectively, on the ground. Shafer was efficient at QB, completing 14-of-22 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. Fitzpatrick finished with game-highs of eight catches for 90 yards. Kicker
Rafael Cervantes Jr.'s eight extra points breaks the single game school record, which previously stood at seven.
Defensively, Beloit was all over the field, recording five sacks, a forced fumble, and two interceptions, both coming from Thorpe.
Ethan Flores led the team with nine tackles and two sacks.
Eli Allen,
Christopher Croft Jr.,
Mitch Douglas, and
Wyatt Hughes also recorded a sack.
Lawrence was led by Jaxson Howley's 11 yards on five carries. Jack Sweeney completed 11-of-22 passes for 68 yards.
Beloit will try to keep things rolling next weekend when they'll travel to Ripon College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. at Ingalls Field in Ripon, Wis.
