RIPON, Wis. - Beloit's football team held their own for the first quarter and a half against conference-leading and undefeated Ripon College, before the Red Hawks pulled away. Beloit finished the game with 214 yards, including 147 on the ground (4.9 yards per carry), while Ripon gained 611 yards, with 410 coming through the air.
Ripon (8-0, 7-0 MWC) got on the board first with an opening-drive that was capped off by a 46-yard touchdown run by Cormac Madigan. Beloit (1-7, 1-6 MWC) would tie things up later in the quarter when
Isaac Wellman caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from
Jacob Shafer. The Red Hawks then grabbed the lead again late in the quarter when Kevin Thao caught an 18-yard TD pass from Jarrett Zibert. Zibert found Madigan for a 15-yard touchdown pass to start the second quarter, before scoring on a one-yard plunge himself. Erik Flores capped the first half scoring with a pair of late field goals, coming from 41 and 27 yards away, as the two teams went to the locker room with Ripon leading 34-7.
Ripon added two more touchdown passes in the third quarter, connecting with Walter Bryant (from Madigan) on a four-yard score, before finding Kaipo Magsayo (from Jack Berens) from one yard out. Beloit would continue to fight to the end, capping a six-play, 60-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Shafer to
AJ Fitzpatrick. Jaylend Brown then capped the scoring for Ripon in the fourth quarter with a TD reception from Berens.
Beloit was led by Donavan Richardson's 77 yards on eight carries (9.6 ypc), which included a long of 36 yards. Devin Bush added 25 yards on just four carries (6.3 ypc). Fitzpatrick led the Buccaneers with four catches for 33 yards. Wellman and
Jose Guillen each caught two passes for 19 and 17 yards, respectively.
Defensively, the Buccaneers intercepted two Ripon passes, with
Thomas Parker picking one off at the goal line and returning it 40 yards, while
Mitch Douglas intercepted the other.
Christopher Croft Jr. led Beloit with seven tackles (six solo).
Ripon was led by Madigan's 125 yards on 15 carries (8.3 ypc), while he also completed his only pass attempt for a four-yard touchdown. Zibert added 25 yards on seven carries, while completing 19-of-27 passes for 297 yards.
Beloit will try to rebound next weekend in what will be their final home game of the 2022 season, and will also be Senior Day for the Buccaneers. That game will begin at 1 p.m. against Lake Forest College at Strong Stadium in Beloit, Wis.
