BELOIT, Wis. - Beloit's football team fell to Knox by a score of 34-25 Saturday afternoon as part of Homecoming weekend. Knox led 14-7 entering the fourth quarter, which saw the two teams combine for 38 points.
Knox got on the board first when Sam Walker scored from three yards out to cap a 16-play, 74-yard drive on the game's opening possession. Quarterback Kaile Williams added a four-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to double the Prairie Fire's lead and give them a 14-0 halftime advantage.
Beloit would cut that lead in half mid-way through the third quarter when
AJ Fitzpatrick caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from
Jacob Shafer. Williams then added a second touchdown from five yards out in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, but Beloit answered with a six-play, 75-yard drive, capped by an 18-yard
Drake Marquez run. Williams would then add two more rushing touchdowns to give Knox a 34-13 lead with just over two minutes to play. Beloit made things interesting down the stretch, as
Gavin Thorpe returned the ensuing kickoff 96 yards for the score. After recovering the onsides kick, the Buccaneers would score again in the final seconds on a seven-yard touchdown reception by Fitzpatrick.
The Buccaneers finished the game with 314 yards of total offense, with 109 coming on the ground and 205 coming through the air. Shafer completed 22-of-36 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns, while Marquez finished with 69 yards on 14 carries (4.9 ypc). Fitzpatrick led all players with 12 receptions, which is the third-most receptions in a single game in Beloit history, for 96 yards, while also gaining 21 yards on two carries.
Defensively, Beloit was led by
Ethan Flores' 24 tackles, which ties a single game school record. Thorpe added 11 tackles, including one for a loss, and an interception, in addition to his kickoff return for a touchdown.
Knox gained 373 yards of total offense, including 259 on the ground and 114 through the air. Williams completed 12-of-17 passes for 114 yards, while also gaining 62 yards on 13 carries, including four touchdowns. Walker led the Prairie Fire with 84 yards on 14 carries (6.0 ypc). Tyler Elfering recorded team-highs of six receptions for 72 yards.
Beloit will be in action again on Saturday when they'll travel to Monmouth College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. in Monmouth, Ill.
