ROCKFORD, Ill. - Beloit's women's basketball team defeated nearby Rockford University 66-60 Sunday afternoon to bring their season record to the .500 mark. Beloit forced 33 Rockford turnovers, which the Buccaneers converted into 28 points. Beloit also outscored Rockford in the paint, 36-14, and on fast-break points, 19-8.
The game saw the lead change hands four times, with all four coming in the first half. After Beloit (3-3) scored the opening basket, Rockford (0-4) scored eight consecutive points to take an early six-point lead. The Buccaneers wouldn't lead again until a couple minutes into the second quarter when an
Elizabeth Kalk layup gave them an 18-17 advantage. After Rockford took the lead again, back-to-back Kalk layups would again give Beloit the lead, as they'd take a two-point advantage into halftime.
Kalk scored the first basket of the second half to give Beloit some breathing room, and the Buccaneers would take a 44-41 lead into the final quarter. Rockford would tie the score at 48 a few minutes into the period, but Beloit answered with a Megan Thompson layup on the ensuing possession. The Buccaneers took their largest lead of eight on a Hadja Bayo layup with under two minutes remaining, which helped them to the victory.
Kalk finished with a game-high 25 points, while nearly recording a double-double with eight steals. She also finished with five rebounds, three assists, and one blocked shot.
T'Aira Boyance and
Hannah Welte each added 10 points, while pulling down eight and five rebounds, respectively.
Alexis Ross added eight points in 13 minutes off the bench.
Rockford was led by Kyla Wilkerson's 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Julie Bailey chipped in with 13 points in 19 minutes off the bench, while Audrina Terhune added 12 points. Tyra Clark and Katie Paredes finished with 14 and 13 rebounds, respectively.
The Buccaneers will try to keep things rolling on Tuesday when they'll open their conference season at home against Lawrence University. That game will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Flood Arena in Beloit, Wis.
