The Beloit College baseball team was edged by Cornell College 5-3 at ABC Supply Stadium in Beloit Wednesday. The loss makes the Midwest Conference standings even tighter coming into the final weekend of regular season games. Beloit's senior class was honored prior to the game.
The Rams took an early lead with a pair of runs in the third. Beloit responded in the bottom of the fifth with
Matt O'Leary pushing two runs across on a single to right center to knot the game 2-2.Â
Cornell reclaimed the lead on a RBI single to center in the sixth then pushed the lead out to two with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.Â
Garrison Ferone registered a sacrifice fly that allowed
Matt Crandall to slide into home safely on a close play to narrow the gap to 4-3 but the Rams added a cushion run in the eighth.Â
The Bucs threatened in the ninth but weren't able to push runners across as Cornell ended the game on a double play.Â
O'Leary led the Beloit offense going 2-4 with a pair of RBI.
AJ Parnell suffered the loss on the mound allowing three runs in 5.1 innings of work.Â
Beloit's final series scheduled for this weekend at Illinois College will be integral in determining which four team's make the league tournament. Lawrence and the University of Chicago have already clinched their spots. The final two come down to Ripon (11-10), Beloit (11-10), Cornell (10-11), Illinois College (10-11) and Grinnell (10-11). The final weekend of games for the teams battling for the final two spots features the Bucs at IC, Cornell at Ripon and Grinnell at Knox.
